Having worked on laptop drives since the first 5meg proprietary laptop drives, DRC has pioneered techniques, equipment, software for working with laptop drive recovery. Data recovery for laptop drives is not like changing a tire or repairing a car. You learn to hear and feel every little movement of the drive, use special electronic readers and software to find the failure on the drive. Even the clicking and other sounds of each drive is different. Experience, knowledge and talent are the keys to successful laptop recovery.
Clicking noises coming from crashed laptop drive is the most common problem, but not only with laptops, but the 3.5" drives also. The clicking noise comes from the arms of the headstack banging back and forth and hitting the stops. When this happens, the headstack can never "come ready" because it can not read the maintanance track or the servo track. This "clicking drive" symptom can be driven by misaligned headstacks or even sector errors, indicative of damage to the platters. In most cases the drive must be opened in a clean environment (clean room or flow bench) and ofetn the head stack must be changed.
Our experience, knowledge and use of the latest in technology gives us the highest recovery percentage. Knowing what is causing the clicking sound (most common) or the little hum or flutter (different for each model and brand) lets DRC use the right technique or equipment to recover your data. Many drive failures can be caused by a stuck head, bad sectors, corrupted firmware, corrupted maintenance track, bad defect list... DRC has the equipment, experience and deep knowledge to correct or work around these problems, then recover your data and return it to you.
A simple search will reveal an enormous amount of information on the web about drive failures and potential solutions that can help you recover your drive. Partner DRC recover your lost data and your chances of recovery increase dramatically. If you need help, call DRC, we are glad to answer most questions.

Call 347-893-3354 (our toll-free number is at the top of every page) to speak with a representative and receive your quote over the phone. We answer our phones 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Fill out a data recovery request form and ship us your drive. please follow any instructions on how to package and ship a hard drive.
Data Recovery Clinic does not charge for the evaluation of your media; furthermore, we do not participate in the "high/low" pricing quote model when possible. (Typically between $500-$2,500.00) We have found that most companies tend to charge on the high end of the quote range. Some recovery companies also have a tendency to exaggerate turn around times . We understand that this can be a stressful time for you and believe that you should be fully informed in your recovery process.
Laptop and notebook drives are much smaller and more fragile than their desktop cousins, consequently they require a more delicate and exacting touch to repair and recover. However, the steps listed above for what you, the user, can do to minimize further data loss remains basically the same.
Some things to remember;
1. Unless the drive was designed to be removed by simply sliding out of the casing, do not attempt to remove it yourself.
2. If you can remove the drive easily, be sure not to put any undue stress on it by applying pressure to the housing on the drive.
3. Take extra care when packaging a laptop drive for shipping, so as not to incur any further damage before reaching one of our labs.
Fill out a request form and include it in your package.
If at all possible, remove the media from the computer. Get expert help if necessary. Send us just the hard drive(s), tape(s), floppy, jaz, zip, optical, flashcard, microdrive etc..
Handle a hard disk drive as you would handle an egg. Handle failed hard disk drives with the same care as new drives.
Use the original shipping materials, if you still have them. If not, they are relatively easy to replicate:
1.) Wrap media in an anti-static bag to prevent Static Electricity.
2.) Use a box that is at least twice the size of the media so that the media can be suspended in the middle of the box. We recommend a minimum of two inches of insulation all around for a 1 Kilo drive.
3.) Pack securely with foam, bubble wrap, or newspaper so the media will not move from the middle of the box. Avoid using peanuts as contents will settle to the bottom of the box.
4.) If sending a computer, laptop or notebook, use great care to ensure proper cushioning and protection. We recommend at least 7 inches for insulation. The heavier the unit, the more insulation required.
